LAWN RENOVATION & REPAIRS.

Lawn renovations and repairs including scarifying, aeration, over-seeding and any  top dressing required,  following treatment for pest damage by leatherjackets, chaffer grubs and or moss removal,  should be carried out between August and Mid November - weather permitting, lighter renovations can be  carried out during the early spring.

Lawns damaged by leatherjackets develop patches, grass turns yellowish brown and often dies. This can be distinguished from other lawn diseases by lifting the affected turf and finding the leatherjackets in the surface layers of the soil

Leatherjackets can be revealed in lawns by soaking with water, covering with material impervious to light, sacking or black polythene.  The following day large numbers of grubs should be found on the surface of the Lawn under the material cover

Birds search for leatherjackets in turf. Leaving small round holes in the turf where they have inserted their beaks. They also search for chafer grubs in a similar manner

Leatherjackets have grey brown elongated tubular bodies, up to 30mm long. They have no legs or obvious head. In flower beds or vegetable plots, seedlings and small plants can be killed when the stems are damaged at soil level
